Janice, I am writing some 10 years after purchasing the ceramic mug that you’ll find pictured in the attachment above. This object, in spite of these years, continues to hold my attention and appreciation. I have a lot of stuff, some of it cool and beautiful, but my mug is the only thing that has ever compelled me to search out its maker and send a letter of thanks… ten years later. I am a wood sculptor and I’m fascinated to know that most of the things I’ve made and the art that I’ve purchased is soon relegated to the “normalcy” pile. While I might pass these items frequently, I no longer see them; they becomes anonymous. Not the mug. I have never handled it without a small conscious awareness of it. The mug, in my office, is alone in its ever-presence. You might like to know that we sent two of your coffee mugs to Seoul, S. Korea to some friends. It’s becoming a small planet. In June, I will move from public education to full-time artist, and I sometimes question the real value of making art. Your mug is a reminder to me that we can do some good for people. Your work and spirit are out in the world doing good. Your work is of value, your work is wonderful. Neil |
